While shopping on the Northcote Road we dropped in to Lola Rojo on a whim one lunchtime. It was fairly early but being the first customers of the day was a slight concern.
As it turned out we need not have worried on two fronts. First, by the time we left it was absolutely rammed and, second, the tapas was so good I would not have cared if we were alone the whole time.
It’s hard to decide on what was best but on reflection I think it has to be the salad of heritage tomatoes with smoked anchovies. We also enjoyed almonds, padron peppers, pan-fried cod, prawns al ajillo with oloroso sherry. Oh, and a racion of cured meats.
Wine list was also good, entirely Spanish - we plumped for a bottle of Blanco Nieva (Rueda).
Tapas. Quite brilliant. Great ingredients, well presented. We just kept going - finishing with manchego and a little glass of PX / Amontillado. 1
Atmosphere. It’s a restaurant, not a bar. Broken into two sections, front and back and narrow enough to create atmosphere once full of people. It’s a wandsworth-bugaboo-cathkidston-jamieoliver-mumsnet-jackwills atmosphere but an atmosphere nonetheless. 3
Value. Given the quality of the tapas and the attentiveness of the staff pretty good. 2
